The Scorecard – Insights from Grantmakers About How Proposals are Evaluated

Despite these uncertain times, many grant-making organizations have not wavered from their missions and focus. Join Dini Spheris for a panel discussion with grant representatives from the Moody Foundation and the Dan L. Duncan Foundation as they discuss trends in the grant application process and how nonprofits can distinguish themselves from the crowd. We’ll discuss some of the commons mistakes organizations make when applying to foundations and also identify ways in which even smaller organizations can position themselves for bigger philanthropy.

Michelle is a Principal at Dini Spheris, where she has served as a team leader on numerous projects including: building a centralized philanthropy program for St. Louis’ Mercy Health system, which spans four states and 32 hospitals, as well as working with Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas, to create the first-ever major gift foundation. A graduate of Texas Tech University, Michelle is often heard speaking at major professional conferences in nonprofit, educational and healthcare philanthropy.

Allan Mathews
Moody Foundation
Allan Matthews is the Director of Grants for the Moody Foundation which supports nonprofits throughout the state of Texas.  He has worked with Foundation since 1991, serving as a program officer, scholarship director and grants officer prior to assuming his current position.  
Allan and his wife Lori have three children and two grandchildren.

 
Laura Liang
Dan L. Duncan Foundation
Laura Liang is Senior Vice President of Operations and Accounting for the Dan L Duncan Family Office and the Chief Grants Officer for the Dan L Duncan Foundation.    Laura has worked in this family office since its formal inception in 2000.  In her capacity Laura leads all aspects of the back office and compliance requirements for the Duncan Family Office and the Dan L Duncan Foundation.      
In addition to her duties in the various Duncan Family entities, Laura is a past director of the Private Investor Coalition, and past board member of Heroes for Children and Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council.
