Thank you for tuning into our April Education Webinar, "Storytelling During A Crisis." Special thanks to our wonderful presenters:

Alice L. Ferris MBA, CFRE, ACFRE and Jim Anderson, CFRE

GoalBusters Consulting Flagstaff, AZ

As promised, we put together a blog recapping the webinar. Here are some of the key takeaways from the presenters:

Cut Through The Clutter

  • Don’t stop talking!!
  • But find a way to create authentic and empathetic communications.

Why Communicate Now?

  • If you don’t share your story, people will fill in the gap with their own or replace you.
  • When things are out of control, people want information.
  • Even with all the information being thrown at people, they have more time to deal with it all.

If your mission was important before COVID-19, then it is important now.

4 Powerful Components To A Story

  1. A protagonist
  2. Obstacle
  3. Journey to overcome
  4. Resolution

4 Story Themes

  1. Mob at the gates: Doesn’t always have to be a group of people, but could also be laws and regulations
  2. Rot at the top: A person or company with great wealth or power who is abusing it and taking it all for themselves
  3. Benevolent Community: Collective positive stories; a group of people who came together because one person couldn’t do it alone
  4. Triumphant Individual: A person who succeeds in spite of all odds thrown at them

It's important to combine themes for the best results. An example of all four themes combined is the movie, "It's A Wonderful Life."

Sharing Stories of Impact During A Crisis

  • Keep it simple and short
  • Lead with facts
  • Share stories of impact
  • Be honest and empathetic
  • Don’t be afraid to ask them to be part of the story

Once again, thank you to our presenters - and for all those who tuned in. If you have feedback on this session or ideas for future COVID-19 related content, please do not hesitate to reach out to Melissa Neeley at
