COVID-19 Update
Dear AFP-Greater Houston Chapter members:

We wanted to share some updates with you about how we are responding to the quickly evolving situation with COVID-19. I don't expect that any leader — be that me as your chapter president or you in your important role serving the nonprofit sector—knows what they will do when a crisis like the COVID-19 virus occurs. But, I'm going to start with the information I have and then go from there.

First, AFP ICON for this year will be virtual only. Please visit their website for more up-to-date information. We will reach out to our scholarship winners separately to make arrangements. Also, we are keeping abreast of the latest updates and recommendations regarding social distancing and have decided to postpone the Advanced Professionals Luncheon. We will continue evaluating other upcoming programming in light of the current situation as each date approaches. Please be on the lookout for updates in our weekly chapter e-blast and on our social media channels.

Second, I just want to acknowledge that all of us are adjusting to a new normal that changes quickly while holding our breath to see what happens next. The services and missions we support will be crucial in the coming weeks and months as we wait for the full impact of this crisis to unfold. But, I take great comfort in the consistently generous and uplifting response our community has had to other challenging events. Ours is a noble profession that connects the important work of our nonprofits with generous supporters so we can collectively make the world a better place. We will be busy as the need to connect donors with worthwhile causes becomes increasingly important while this crisis subsides.

We will get through this in the same way Houston has with past events like Hurricane Harvey: by pulling each other up by our bootstraps and helping one another to get our city and state back on its feet. There will be hard times, of course! But we are a resilient city and a collaborative profession that can move mountains together.
In the days and weeks ahead, please keep in mind those worthwhile "mission" moments we all have that engage us in our work. They will be an important source of hope in the uncertain times ahead. For me in my work at an essential healthcare provider, it is knowing that we will continue to be here with our doors open to those who need us, no matter what.

Please leave a note on our Facebook page or Instagram account to let us know how you are doing. And if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me directly at We'll get through this and make Texas proud as only our city can: with compassion and collaboration.

Sending you all virtual hugs! Stay hopeful and healthy.
