Individual Giving and Veterans Build Manager

How long have you been working in fundraising? When did you join AFP and why did you become a member?

I‘ve been working in fundraising for about a year. I joined AFP in 2016 as a member of the University of Houston’s AFP collegiate chapter. The benefits to membership were excellent, so I continued to be a part of AFP after school.

What keeps you motivated at your organization?

Mission. I really enjoy seeing families find an affordable, decent place to live, and I love working with people who have the same passion to help others. Another big motivator is being responsible for revitalizing our veterans program.

If you could describe your job in one to two sentences, what would you say?

As a small shop, my job is multi-faceted. While I primarily fundraise (individual giving, grants, major gifts), I also develop and manage our veterans program, coordinate volunteers, enter gifts and run reports in our CRM, and facilitate our use of project management software for the construction and development departments.

How has AFP made a difference in your career?

AFP really was one of the foundational pieces in my career. Through their support for the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance program, I received fundraising and career readiness training, volunteered and attended National Day of Philanthropy and Ask the Experts events, and even attended an AFP International Conference. These experiences sparked my love for the profession and have inspired me to continue to learn and grow. I am grateful that Houston Habitat for Humanity recognizes the value of AFP by funding my membership and supporting additional professional development opportunities.

What is one tip you would give to other fundraisers?

Check out the AFP forum. I’ve often found discussions on there that have helped me. Some of the threads on there are like mini educational luncheons.
