The Perks of Joining AFP Houston

When I got my first full-time job at a nonprofit as a Development Associate, I met up with a family friend who suggested I join AFP. I started timidly showing up to luncheons and soaking in all the incredible information and the access to fantastic speakers. Not only was I bringing back new ideas to my organization, I was also able to discover where I wanted to go in my career. I volunteered for Ask The Experts and then quickly started managing social media for AFP Houston. I was able to then use those skills from being on the communications committee to my own job. It was then recommended to me that I apply to be on the board, to which I immediately thought, “I’m way too young!” It was a terrible thought. Luckily, I was so encouraged by others that I joined the board. I have been very impressed and proud that our chapter values and celebrates the ideas of young professionals. I’m happy to say, I’m no longer the youngest person serving on the board. And now, I go out of my way to encourage colleagues to join AFP ... and, of course, to volunteer!

In the beginning, learning and networking were my main reasons for being an AFP Member. But in the last few years, along with volunteering, I’ve been proud to be a member for so many more reasons. Recently, my dad started volunteering with a nonprofit doing some fundraising (insert proud daughter moment!) and he came to me with an ethics question, so I printed out the code of ethics for him, and we had a great discussion about it. I’ve also been very impressed with AFP’s focus on diversity and inclusion. I have enjoyed many speakers and webinars around this important issue and I hope to be a part of the Women’s Impact Summit this fall. In addition, AFP Global has recently rolled out two new benefits to help with career advancement: AFP360° and AAUW Online Negotiation Workshops. AFP has partnered with the American Association of University Women (AAUW) to provide all members a free one-hour online negotiation workshop. In addition, AFP has launched with Korn Ferry the new AFP360°, our online career builder and management tool!

Being a member of AFP Houston comes with many perks. It’s allowed me to learn from fundraising legends like Penelope Burke, and pick up incredible tips from local fundraising heroes. I’ve been able to watch webinars with my colleagues at work and read blogs written by my peers. I’ve made lifelong friends, who truly understand the highs and lows of this noble profession. I also have mentors who have given me opportunities within AFP to gain leadership experience, and who continue to encourage me in my career. I have MANY years left of being an AFP member and I look forward to what the future holds.
