Nominating Your Donor(s) for A National Philanthropy Day Award?

My Top Ten List!

We’re almost two weeks away from the deadline for 2019 National Philanthropy Day on Friday, May 31st. As a long-time member of the NPD Awards Committee, this is my second year serving as an Award Application Mentor. My goal is to answer questions and assist you in submitting the best application you can. Nominations are such a wonderful way to steward and cultivate our generous philanthropic partners, from individuals and foundations to corporations and volunteers.

In case you couldn’t attend the April breakfast or Friday’s luncheon, I want to share my Top 10 List for writing a stellar application for this year’s NPD awards. Here are the tips and tricks I highly encourage:

  1. Use our new checklist to make sure you have everything ready to go with your application.

  2. Collaborate with other nonprofits in the application process, whether on writing letters of recommendation or offering additional details about how our donors make significant impact with their giving.

  3. Involve the nominee in the application process so that individual or group can share their story first-hand.

  4. Look at past applications that were chosen to see what makes a great nomination stand out. (See the Hirsch Award sample here, Outstanding Communications Partner sample here, Outstanding Small Corporation sample here, and Outstanding Fundraising Program sample here.)

  5. Highlight the impact of your nominee with measurable results and descriptive details.

  6. Share a draft of the application with others for an outside perspective.
  7. Get different perspectives while gathering information to tell your nominee’s story.

  8. Review your application thoroughly for spelling and grammar.

  9. Revise an application from a prior year. Many honorees have been nominated before.

  10. Don’t put it off. Start today, there is still time.
