Mourning a Philanthropic Force of Nature

Lester Smith Leaves a Lasting Impact on AFP Greater Houston

How do you properly sum up a man like Lester Smith in words? Given his penchant for dancing and his larger-than-life personality, it seems almost a disservice to keep to just words when discussing Lester’s great passion for life and making a difference in his community and the world.

The passing of Lester Smith is a huge loss for the Houston community, and the Association of Fundraising Professionals - Greater Houston Chapter mourns the loss of a great man whose generosity and spirit has touched countless lives and made Houston a better community.

With his lovely wife, Sue, Lester gave generously to many institutions, including Baylor College of Medicine, the Holocaust Museum, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Texas Children’s Cancer Center, Harris County Hospital District and Ben Taub Hospital, the Houston Ballet, the Houston Symphony, The Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and so many more.

Lester and Sue’s enormous spirit for impactful giving has brought them many well-deserved honors, and AFP-GHC is proud to have presented Lester and Sue Smith with several awards over the years at the annual National Philanthropy Day awards luncheon, including AFP's top honor - the Maurice Hirsch Award for Philanthropy in 2015, Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year in 2012, the Honor Your Father Campaign for Prostate Cancer in 2005, which also won an AFP International Award in 2006.

AFP-GHC honors Lester’s bright spirit of service, and his memory will serve as a tremendous example to future philanthropists and leaders in Houston and beyond.
