Inspiring Leadership

  • Who we are is how we lead
  • Our role as leaders is to find the awesome in others
  • Become masters at helping people to think for themselves
  • The most effective way to activate is not to give advice on how you think
  • You can lead, impact, and influence from any position in an organization
  • Apply the principles of servant leadership – lead by serving others

Inclusive Leadership

  • Lead with the attitude that the room is the smartest person in the room
  • The best leaders understand that those working on the ground with clients know the most and they know how to lead them
  • When expressing opinions, the safest, most productive method is to stand on your ground while being open to others’ opinions

Community-Centered Fundraising

New thought idea: “community-centered” fundraising as opposed to donor-centered fundraising.

  • Focus shift from a single mission to the entire nonprofit ecosystem
  •  Need to think of our relationships with one another
  • Be mission guided, not mission driven
  • Move from shielding donors to having honest conversations regarding race, gender, wealth disparity, etc.
  • Move donors from having a savior complex and “othering” those they are trying to help to an enlightened self-interest
  • Help donors believe they benefit from the work we do, too – it’s not just charity
  • Move from transactional charity to transformative partnerships (e.g. “Your contribution, along with the work of our leadership, volunteers and staff, allowed all of us together to help XYZ”)
  • Think of fundraisers as agents of social justice rather than just resource generators and involve them in strategic conversations at the sector level
  • Examples of community-centered fundraising:
    • Invite donors to have conversations about issues
    • Challenge donors regarding their ignorance
    • Introduce donors to other missions
    • Encourage donors to see how they benefit
    • Ask for support for partner organizations

Five Steps to Build Your Brand

  1. Know your value
  2. Understand what your value is worth
  3. Have a digital presence – must be all show and no tell
  4. Be consistent
  5. Focus on education that increases your value
    •  Stay authentic: Understand who you are and keep the unique parts of you
    • Bottom line:
      • Do what you say you will do
      • Be present
      • Make hard choices (just be you)
