The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) – Greater Houston Chapter recently celebrated the 2017 Awards Dinner honoring Barbara Walker, CFRE, with the M. The event, held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Houston, also featured a lively conversation with David Weekley, founder of David Weekley Homes.

Barbara Walker is the Senior Development Director of Baylor College of Medicine. She has been a member of AFP since 1989 and has held the Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential since 1994. She is a past president of the AFP Greater Houston Chapter and is a dedicated volunteer and mentor within the profession. Barbara was awarded with the M. Anne Murphy Award for Professional Advancement, which honors an individual who serves as a leader and mentor, who furthers the education of nonprofit professionals.

“It is commendable that our chapter acknowledges teaching and mentoring within our profession. AFP supports professional growth and further elevates the practice of ethical fundraising.  I enjoy interacting with fellow fundraising professionals to help them use their own unique skills to make our community a better place.” – Barbara L. Walker, CFRE

Kevin J. Foyle is the Vice President for Development and Public Affairs for the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). He is a member of AFP and holds the Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential. He volunteers as Vice Chair for Membership Services and is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Board for AFP. Previously he has served as past President of the AFP Greater Houston Chapter. Kevin was awarded with the Outstanding Fund Raising Executive of the Year, which honors an individual fundraising professional who demonstrates outstanding skills in coordinating and motivating groups of volunteers for fundraising projects for the benefit of charitable institutions.

Now more than ever, it’s critical for our city to celebrate the positive impact that the philanthropic community makes on each of our lives. It’s a true honor to serve as a representative of such a noble profession and to partner with such inspirational volunteer leaders.” – Kevin J. Foyle, CFRE

David Weekley is a homebuilder, a philanthropist, and a proud Houstonian. He founded David Weekley Homes in 1976 at age 23 and established the David Weekley Family Foundation in 1990. His company is now the largest privately-owned homebuilder in the country, and David generously contributes 50% of his time and 50% of his income to nonprofit organizations. He is guided by the belief that everyone has a responsibility to give back and serve others by investing one’s time, talent and treasures to make a positive difference in communities throughout the world. David’s wife, Bonnie, was also in attendance.

During David’s conversation with AFP Board Member, Marc Levinson, he spoke about “active philanthropy” and giving your time as well as your financial support. He walked the audience through his process when choosing a project to support and how partnership is so important, that we all must bring gifts together to advance mankind and help the community.
