Title: Ethics for the Rest of Us 

Subtitle: Mischief, Scandal and Bad Behavior: Ethics in the Nonprofit Sector

Description: As AFP members, we have committed to ethical standards and principles that are the foundation for maintaining donor and public trust. For many fundraising professionals, the topic of ethics may seem rather academic…until we confront an ethical challenge in a real-life scenario.  Join us for a lively program with the AFP Global Ethics Committee Education Chair Peggy Rhoads, CFRE, and Ethics Committee Chair John Scola, CFRE, addressing the real world of ethics and fundraising. Bring your energy, your experiences, your common sense, and sense of humor for this fun and informative presentation.

Speaker Bios:  

John Scola, CFRE: John is SVP Advancement for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley in Phoenix. He has earned designation as a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) as well as Master Teacher through the Faculty Training Academy of the AFP. He was also the recipient of the AFP’s Greater Arizona Chapter Outstanding Executive Award in 2002, and serves as Chair of the AFP Global Ethics Committee John is certified as a BoardSource Trainer, is a certified Consultant in Nonprofit Lifecycles, and is a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP).

Peggy Rhoads, CFRE: Peggy Rhoads’ career in nonprofit service has spanned nearly 30 years. She has extensive experience in board relations, major gifts, special events, annual fund campaigns, grant writing and management, and volunteer management. Before joining the Health Museum, she served as Senior Director of Development at Genesys Works Houston, where she raised funds to support hundreds of under-resourced high school students in skills training and paid internships at 50+ corporations throughout Houston. She previously served in lead fundraising roles at the American Cancer Society, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, the Sunshine Kids Foundation, and Montrose Clinic (now known as Legacy Community Health Services).  

Peggy is a graduate of Rice University and a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE). She is a proud member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and currently serves on AFP’s Global Ethics Committee. She is a graduate of Leadership Houston and Fort Bend Leadership for Nonprofit Excellence. She has volunteered with many worthy causes over the years and has served on the boards and committees of Leadership Houston, Psophonia Dance Company, A+ Unlimited Potential Charter School, and Power Tools for Nonprofits.
