Youth in Philanthropy

AFP-GHC’s Youth in Philanthropy Awards

The Association of Fundraising Professional (AFP) is committed to the development of the next generation of fundraisers. The Association understands that in order to ensure that there will be interest in the nonprofit sector and fundraising in the future, members must expose today’s youth to philanthropy in a meaningful way. With that goal in mind, AFP created the Youth in Philanthropy Subcommittee more than a decade ago.

Each chapter of the Association has a Youth in Philanthropy component within its Community Outreach and Diversity Committee. The AFP-Greater Houston Chapter (GHC) hosted its 5th Annual Youth in Philanthropy Award this year. Currently throughout the Houston area, young adults are performing countless selfless acts and inspirational community service projects. This award recognizes students in the Greater Houston area who have been compassionate and innovative in their community through volunteerism and fundraising activities.

AFP-GHC is pleased to announce our 2016 YIP Award Winners and two Honorable Mentions that we presented at our July 15th Monthly Education Session, Lunch with Leaders.

First place $3,000 - Kempner High School student Dorothy Le who created a volunteer program with fellow students for River Oaks Chamber Orchestra providing ushers, box office assistants and concert production crew.  Dorothy had club dues for all members and encouraged volunteers to purchase student rate tickets to the concerts they worked.

First Runner up $1,000 - Clements High School National Honor Society students who participated in a team service project and worked to raise funds for The Sunshine Kids through bake sales.

Second Runner up $1,000 - Klein Forest, Klein Forest Interact Club who worked with Hermann Park Conservancy to help restore a large section of the park near downtown.

Houston has many wonderful organizations in our public schools, and we at AFP-GHC want to support and encourage these students and their leadership service in the nonprofit community.
