Houstonians Honored at National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon
Association of Fundraising Professionals—Greater Houston Chapter
2017 National Philanthropy Day® Awards Luncheon



More than 950 guests attended the Association of Fundraising Professionals—Greater Houston Chapter’s (AFP-GHC) annual National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon on Thursday, November 16 at the Hilton-Americas Houston. This year’s event, “Change Houston with a Giving Heart,” honored and recognized those in our community who contribute their time, talents, financial support and resources to Houston’s nonprofit organizations. The AFP-GHC’s luncheon is part of a national celebration involving hundreds of organizations across the country to spotlight the importance of philanthropy.

Honorary Chair Trini Mendenhall and Corporate Honorary Chair ExxonMobil—represented by
Truman Bell, joined luncheon chair Sara Wise and co-chair Marilu Garza, in recognizing and
thanking this year’s award winners and collectively expressing appreciation to the individuals,
corporations, foundations and fundraisers for their dedication to improving our community and
to the spirit of giving.

Houston philanthropist Margaret Alkek Williams was honored with the prestigious Maurice
Hirsch Award for Philanthropy; and Marc J. Shapiro received the award for Outstanding
Volunteer Fundraiser. Other awards recipient include: Nan Duhon, who received the Byron
Welch Award for Lifetime Achievement; Barbara Walker, CFRE, who received the M. Anne
Murphy Award for Professional Advancement; Kevin J. Foyle, CFRE, who received the award
for Outstanding Fundraising Executive of the Year; the Jerold B. Katz Foundation, which
received the award for Outstanding Philanthropic Foundation; Occidental Petroleum
Corporation, which received the Houston Business Journal Outstanding Large Corporation
award; and The Center, which received the award for Outstanding Fundraising Program, More Than $2 Million for The Pursuit For Those With disABILITIES Capital Campaign.

 

In addition, Mary B. McIntire, Ph.D., received a special award—the Outstanding Leadership and Contributions to Houston Philanthropy, for her work in establishing the first structured
educational program for fundraising professionals and non-profit leadership through the
Glasscock School for Continuing Studies at Rice University.

Texas Children’s Hospital; Presenting Wealth Management Sponsor, South Texas Money
Management; and Presenting Media Sponsor, Houston Business Journal. The 2017 event also
recognized the successes of Youth in Philanthropy as they honored the 2017 Award recipients
listed below. The award winners were selected by a diverse and educated team of volunteer
judges from the philanthropic sectors of the city.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP):
The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) is a professional association of individuals
responsible for generating philanthropic support for a wide variety of nonprofit charitable
organizations. Founded in 1960, AFP advances philanthropy through its more than 30,000
members in 230 chapters throughout the world.

The Greater Houston Chapter of AFP was founded in 1969 and currently boasts a membership of almost 600 individuals. Serving as the leading association network of nonprofit professionals in southeast Texas, the chapter advances philanthropy through advocacy, research, education and certification programs.
