Last month, the AFP Houston’s Scholarship Committee awarded 3 fundraisers scholarships to attend AFP’s International Fundraising Conference in San Francisco, CA from April 30-May 2. Since the conference is quickly approaching, Adam Supgul, Co-Chair of Membership had a mini Q&A session to learn more.

Huge congratulations to Audra Jesudason (Houston Zoo), Lauren Peterson (Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston), and Nick Stinson (Rice University). We look forward to hearing more about your experiences at the conference.

What is the reason you’re looking forward to attending the conference or what you’re most excited about?

“I can’t decide what I am most excited about. I can boil it down to a couple of areas, though. I think leadership development and almost all sessions in the Trends and Innovation track. The way we engage our donors must evolve with our community. I think it is really helpful for AFP International to feature a track that focuses on technology, impact and creative fundraising. “

“I’m not sure that I could say that there’s anything that I am the most excited about, because I am really ecstatic about all of it! I’m looking forward to gaining new perspectives in the areas of my current job responsibilities. Specifically, seeing how other fundraising shops are engaging their corporate donors and managing their events.

This scholarship is also affording me the ability to sharpen my skills in areas that I do not have as much experience in, but am trying to transition to. I currently have some moves management responsibilities, and am looking forward to learning more about it at the conference. And hopefully take home new and creative ways to steward donors. Likewise, I am excited to learn more about major gift solicitation. I feel that I will be able to take home a lot of new skills and will be able to better both my organization and my career.

The one non-fundraising thing that I am really looking forward to is getting to visit the oldest Chinatown in the US! I am hoping to have enough time to visit the fortune cookie factory.”

– Lauren Peterson

“I’m a huge Tom Ahern fanboy. A friend cross-stitched one of his phrases as a gift for me, and I have it sitting on my desk. So I’m excited to hear him speak. And, of course, there is no shortage of other brilliant speakers to be impressed by. But most of all, I’m excited to connect with fellow fundraisers who are passionate about, and deeply committed to, elevating themselves and our profession.”

– Nick Stinson

What are your thoughts on the scholarship application process?

“The process for applying was fairly easy. A big ‘thank you’ to AFP-Greater Houston for making this opportunity possible.”

–  Audra Jesudason

“I found the scholarship process to be easy and straight forward.”

– Lauren Peterson

“Applying for a scholarship provides you an opportunity to reflect on your values as a fundraiser… and to update your resume! (You know you’ve been needing to.) That’s the positive spin on what can sometimes feel like a tedious task. The truth is, though, this is one of the most straightforward and LEAST tedious application processes I’ve seen.”

– Nick Stinson
