Speakers: Tim Burcham

Timothy R. Burcham, CFRE, serves as the Vice President for KCTCS, which comprises 16 two-year colleges with 68 campuses throughout Kentucky. Tim provides leadership forall private fund-raising, marketing and communications, alumni affairs, strategic planning, event planning, grants and contracts, governmental affairs, and change/project management.He also serves as the KCTCS Legislative Liaison to the Kentucky General Assembly in Frankfort, the Kentucky delegation in the U.S. Congress, and founded and serves as the Executive Director of the KCTCS Foundation, Inc., the System’s independent statewide foundation.

Prior to joining KCTCS as Vice President in 1998, Tim spent more than 20 years at the University of Kentucky in three major capacities - as the Director of Freshman Admissions from 1979-86; as the Associate Director of Development for the UK Medical Center from 1986-90; and finally as the first and only Director of Development for the UK Community College System (UKCCS) from 1990 until the UKCCS was merged into KCTCS in 1997. Under Tim's leadership, Kentucky’s two-year college system successfully completed its first system-wide major gifts campaign - The Partners In Progress Campaign- that raised a total of $43.2 million in private gifts and pledges. Tim also oversaw the first KCTCS statewide major gifts campaign, The Fulfilling the Promise Campaign, which concluded on October 31, 2011 having raised more than $100 million.Before moving to Kentucky, Tim served as an admissions counselor for Marshall University in Huntington, WV from 1975 -78.

Tim has carried the professional designation as a Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) since 1993. He is the pastInternational Board Chairman for the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), after serving for more than twenty years in a variety of AFP international committee, division, and Board leadership positions. He is also the founding chair of the AFP Political Action Committee for Philanthropy, the first of its kind in the nation. He currently serves on the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy (USA) Board of Directors. In addition to his international roles with AFP, Tim has servedas Chair of the AFP Bluegrass Chapter Board in Lexington, KY. Tim holds a Bachelor's Degree in Speech and Language Arts from MarshallUniversity, and a Masters of Science in Higher Education Administration from the University of Kentucky.

Big Gifts for Small Shops

When you're a small organization, you may look at larger institutions and the gifts they secure as impossible for you to get. But small shops can make connections and build relationships to develop big gifts, too. In this session, we'll review the process of developing a major donor relationship; develop a case for support that inspires big gifts; and pinpoint how you can be strategic in your development approach when you don't have a lot of hands to do the work.

In this session:

Assess organizational readiness and infrastructure needs to secure big gifts.
Prioritize techniques that will work for your organization.
Identify team members for gift cultivation and solicitation.
Develop a workable action plan when you have a small staff and competing priorities.

About the Presenters
Alice L. Ferris, MBA, CFRE, ACFRE and James Anderson are partners in GoalBusters, providing philanthropic leadership services, specializing in outsourced development for small nonprofits; integrated fundraising, marketing and strategic planning; and customized education and training programs. GoalBusters has clients in many sectors, including public and community broadcasting, education, arts and culture, social service, healthcare, and Native American causes. In their careers to date, Alice and Jim have helped raise over $9 million for organizations and philanthropic causes.

Jim Anderson has more than 25 years of sales and sales training experience through his positions with local media and national research companies such as Nielsen Media, Simmons and Scarborough Research. Consistently recognized as a top revenue producer ($30 million+), Jim earned "Sales Executive" and "Negotiator of the Year" awards. He migrated into the nonprofit arena in 2005, and specializes in analyzing donor motivations, implementing marketing and social media campaigns, finding compelling stories for organizational case statements, improving nonprofit communications, and making any special event more effective and fun. In 2010, Jim was selected at the AFP Northern Arizona Fundraising Professional of the Year.

Alice Ferris has over twenty years of professional fundraising experience, and is a two-time honoree as AFP-Northern Arizona Fundraising Professional of the Year. Alice is a member of the AFP International Board, was 2009-2010 Vice Chair, Member Services for AFP International and was the 90th professional in the world to receive the Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive credential. She specializes in strategic and development planning, board development, annual giving, and nonprofit operations.

Alice and Jim, who are both AFP Master Teachers, have presented at AFP Chapters throughout North America and at the AFP International Conference.

Martha H. Schumacher, ACFRE (Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive) is President of Hazen Inc. Hazen provides comprehensive fundraising counsel for nonprofit organizations around the world, specializing in campaign and major gift strategy, solicitation and training; board, staff and organizational development; and development planning. She has worked with and within nonprofit organizations for 25 years.

Ms. Schumacher’s current and recent clients include the American Red Cross, National Aquariums in Washington DC and Baltimore, Epilepsy Foundation, Humane Society of the United States, and Best Buddies International. Before launching Hazen, she led the Defenders of Wildlife fundraising team as Vice President for Development.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals Washington DC Chapter (AFP/DC) recently named Ms. Schumacher Outstanding Professional Fundraiser of the Year. She serves on the AFP International Board of Directors and was the AFP/DC president in 2002. Mrs. Thornton has been the Director of Planned Giving since the department's inception in August 2001. She is responsible for identification, cultivation, and solicitation of planned gifts. Her previous work experience was as a financial consultant for a life insurance and investment company for the past fifteen years. She worked with individuals in retirement, investment, and estate planning. Mrs. Thornton has a BBA in Finance from the University of Texas, and is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®). She works with donors to assess the best way to make gifts to the university, and is available to meet with donors and their advisors.

Adrienne Capps has led many dozens of board members, Executive Directors, Deans, Assistant Deans, faculty and program staff to engage in fundraising. Examining behaviors, motivations, strengths, weaknesses and individual’s perspectives has helped her countless times to reduce the fear of fundraising, promote the professional profile of fundraising and ultimately teach my supervisors to be successful in fundraising, which makes me successful too. With 13+ years in the field, an MBA and the CFRE since 2004, she currently leads a $16M campaign effort as the Assistant Dean for Development and External Relations and Senior Management Team Member at the UC Davis School of Education.
